You can sage every corner of the house, run a salt bath, carry black tourmaline in your pocket and set an intention at the new moon, and still feel that heavy, murky energy follow you around. If that’s you, here’s why: most advice on how to clear negative energy is aimed at the room, when the energy you can’t shake is coming from inside you.
I’m not anti-sage. Cleanse your space if it makes you feel good. But if the heaviness keeps coming back no matter how much you smudge, it’s because you’ve been clearing the wrong thing. Let me show you what that energy actually is, and how it clears at the source – properly, so it doesn’t just creep back by the weekend.
In this post:
What “negative energy” actually is
When you feel heavy, drained, murky, low – the thing you’re calling negative energy – that’s almost always your own un-cleared emotional charge. The old fears, the wounds, the resentment, the anxiety, the self-criticism that’s been quietly accumulating in your system. It’s real, it’s heavy, and you can feel it physically. But it isn’t floating in from the curtains.
And because it’s running inside you, it colours everything you look at. You read the heaviness onto your environment – the house feels oppressive, the city feels hostile, that person gives off a “bad vibe”. Sometimes it’s them. Often it’s the charge in you, projected outwards onto whatever’s nearby. Clean the projector all you like; the smudge is on the lens.
Why sage, salt and crystals don’t hold
Sage, salt, crystals, sound baths – these are all aimed at a space. And for a space, fine. But you are not a space. You’re a system carrying charge, and that charge walks out of the cleansed room with you, still fully intact.
It’s like spraying air freshener over a bin that needs emptying. The room smells lovely for an hour. The rubbish is still in there, and soon enough you’re reaching for the can again. You can’t cover up rubbish with scented candles – or sage. At some point you have to actually take it out. Clearing the space treats the symptom for an afternoon. Clearing the charge in you is what makes the heaviness genuinely lift.
“But I absorb other people’s energy”
This is the one I hear most: “I’m an empath, I soak up everyone else’s energy, I have to protect myself from other people.” And sensitivity is real – some of us genuinely register what’s going on in a room more than others.
But here’s the part that changes everything. What makes you a sponge isn’t other people. It’s your own un-cleared charge. You don’t absorb a stranger’s anxiety at random; you resonate with it, because you’ve got the matching frequency already loaded in your system. Their fear lands on your fear and the two ring like a struck bell. Clear your own charge on that theme, and the same person’s mood washes straight past you. There’s nothing left in you for it to catch on.
So the goal isn’t endless shielding, visualising white light, and bracing before every social event. That’s exhausting, and it’s a lifetime sentence. The goal is to clear what makes you resonate in the first place. Then you don’t need the armour, because there’s nothing to defend.
How to clear negative energy at the source
If the heaviness is charge in your system, then clearing it means draining that charge – not relocating it, not masking it, not white-knuckling past it.
Think of emotional charge like water soaked into a towel. You don’t get it out by waving the towel around the room. You wring it out – twist it one way, then the other – until it runs dry. That’s what clearing does: it takes the charge out of the theme that’s weighing you down, so it’s genuinely gone rather than temporarily masked. Head Trash Clearance is the daily version of that wringing-out. And for the heaviest, oldest charge – the stuff that’s been making you heavy for as long as you can remember – the deeper wound healing work goes after it at the root.
This is the same engine as raising your vibration: take the heavy charge out, and what’s left is lighter by default. Not because you protected it. Because you cleared it.

What cleared energy feels like
People rarely describe what it’s like on the other side, so let me. When you’ve actually cleared the charge rather than smudged the room, the change has a distinct signature:
- You feel physically lighter. The heaviness people call negative energy genuinely lifts, because it was weight, and the weight is gone.
- You stop picking things up. Walk into the same charged room or stand near the same difficult person, and it slides off you.
- You react less. The things that used to drain you for hours barely touch the sides.
- You stop needing the rituals. No more frantic shielding, cleansing and protecting – because there’s nothing left to protect.
- The world looks different, because the lens is clean. Less hostility out there, because there’s less charge in here painting it that way.
That’s how you actually clear negative energy: not by chasing it around your home with a smoking bundle of herbs, but by clearing the charge in you that was generating the heaviness in the first place. Cleanse the space if you enjoy it. Then clear the source, and notice how much less there is to cleanse.
